After investing much money into a piece of equipment, it is a priority to recoup the cost as quickly as possible. In the case of our CNC circuit board plotter, we been putting it to good use, but there are still periods of downtime when we are not using it for its intended purpose of cutting circuit boards.
So we have two options. We could leave the CNC off doing nothing, or we can find other applications in which it can generate additional revenue for the company, even if the scope of the projects fall out of the company's primary business model. It should not matter. Money is green, and that green will get us out of the red that much quicker.
Case in point, we are using FR-4 material to cut custom and prototype panels, grilles, wiring boards, fan guards and engraved nameplates for local customers and student's projects. We can work on an area up to 8 x 10 inches with material as thick as 1/8 inch with or without copper cladding. Great for design-proving and neatening up messy wiring.
